I'm in Australia and face the same problem. It's super hard to open a merchant account here. I'd love to have a merchant account to do things like automatic credit card processing (and refunding partial payments etc) and easy upsells, but to get one you have to either pay tens of thousands of dollars or wait months and submit a thousand and one forms to different companies.
