The biggest signals I pay attention to are:
1) When they call me on my bullshit, do I listen and take it to heart?
2) Do they back me up, private & publicly, to other people?
3) Do they trust me to make decisions, and ask for help when I need it?
4) Are they looking out for my career?
5) When they have feedback, is it specific?
