I almost can't believe I had to scroll this far to find a sensible comment.
Honest question (as someone very ignorant about the business world), why do people spend money on this stuff? And why do so many people (based on the comments here) act like it's OK to create such products (i.e. products that bring literally nothing innovative or useful to the table)? By OK I mean ethically, considering that there are so many more pressing problems in the world.

Just to be clear, I want to understand that you're asserting: 1) It is morally unethical to create a non-innovative product and 2) It is morally unethical to work on something other than "a pressing problem" in the world, as you define pressing problems ? Or are you saying, 1) In a world with "more pressing problems", it is unethical to work on something as low-value as a non-innovative product ? And for context: what projects do you feel are ethically acceptable ways for people to spend their time on, and what do you do?
