Rather they choose from a list created by their manager and their manager's manager, typically from a grab bag of smallish projects that were already on the roadmap. Whether or not there is malice (or just impoliteness) in this, dismissing people's concerns about Google because libcrurl is just "the plans of an intern" is a non sequitur.
