CGI trailers and other filler content don't build hype to nearly the same extent as gameplay does. Don't forget that the lack of gameplay shown was one of the reasons this years E3 was considered a big disappointment by most. The reason Sony's 2016 E3 press conference is widely regarded as the best press conference ever, in addition to the live orchestra, was that they blasted the audience with long gameplay demo after gameplay demo. It had very little filler speeches by executives and few empty CGI trailers, and it made a big difference.
