Everyone assumed that he was just a greedy bastard who didn't want to hire people so he could keep the money for himself and if he wanted to give them the game faster he'd just hire more developers. I'm pretty sure I read a plan file from the '90s where he wrote a massive screed against this Mythical Man Month shit. And this was John Carmack, actual mythic hero. No name game developer will get super shit on.
