Yes the gaming community can be exceedingly toxic at times, but in this case I'd say that developers and publishers did this to themselves.
Biggest case-in-point since Watch Dogs: Anthem.
Here's the E3 reveal: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EL5GSfs9fi4&t=330s https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EL5GSfs9fi4&t=330s.
We have since learned[1], after the disastrous launch of this game, that this video was showing even the dev team what the game was supposed to be about. This game did not even exist yet as an official entity until after E3 2017 (heck, it was going to be called "Beyond" until the week-ish before E3), and then the team had just over a year to build and launch it, with predictable results.

- duxup 7y agoI wonder how many developers decide what goes on stage...or what they would show if it was their call? The indie games I follow are very cautious about what early stage stuff they show. I suspect that is pretty close to what developers would decide.
- JauntyHatAngle 7y agoThat sounds like marketers deciding the direction of the product. I guess you could relate that to the Steve Jobs quote about how when product focused companies get their decisions made by the sales/marketing team, they begin failing.
- xsmasher 7y agoIf developers made the call they probably wouldn't do any marketing before the release of the game - "Just wait until it's finished, otherwise the marketing material might be inaccurate!" Their game would fail, but they wouldn't know why.
- canpan 7y ago> ... that this video was showing even the dev team what the game was supposed to be about. I cannot find it anymore, but there was a (very old) website about game development failure quotes. One quote I can still remember was something like: "You know your game fails when you read in the news about the feature you are supposed to have" This kind of stuff is going on for a long time. Only, the internet changed how the audience reacted.
- elliekelly 7y agoIs this the same Anthem that’s plastered in ads all over Origin? I thought it was just meant to be EA’s knock-off version of Fortnite/PUBG? It actually looks like it would be kind of cool as a single player game, I wonder why they went through the effort to make it multi if they only had a year to build?
- walrus01 7y agoAnthem was supposed to be a destiny 2 killer (shoot, loot), instead it's become a sad joke. The Kotaku article does a good job explaining why.
- newsgremlin 7y agoI thought Destiny 2 was already dead? It seems it still has it's following, although I always thought Warframe was the leader of shooter looters, even though these aren't my type of games.
- walrus01 7y agoIt had a fairly major resurgence after the "forsaken" expansion was released. Judging by the size and activity level of the two separate subreddits dedicated to it totaled together, quite a lot of people.
- MrMember 7y agoDestiny 2 is actually going partially free to play this fall. The base game and the first year of content will be free.
- pdimitar 7y agoI'm yet to see a game that's as smooth and polished as Warframe. I've tried like 10 and I'm amazed how such a small studio like DE basically raised the bar for everybody else.

- fooey 7y agoEven more stark when you compare Anthems demo of their signature Cataclysm events, and what they shipped months after release https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=l7iqzwD3hlI https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=l7iqzwD3hlI It's so bad, it's like a low budget porn ripoff version of the game they sold.
- dkersten 7y ago> Here's the E3 reveal Man, I haaaaate these "fake-gamer" actor gameplay videos so much. I've never ever played a multi-player game for real and had people talk like that.
