They don't have a good visual display of the check engine light, but you can get a lot of information from that light, with the cross manufacturer standard ODBII/EOBD (on board diagnostics 2 / enhanced onboard diagnostics). Progress is going slow in adding features, but a $35 tool like this can give you detailed information. One of the best car related purchases I have made:
