Is there a market out there for a modern dumb TV? A good panel, decent speakers and a load of I/O in a slick enclosure? I think I’d buy this.

I think I’d buy this.
- scarface74 7y agoNo because just like Windows PCs. They operate on small margins and make money by bundling software in the case of consumer Windows PCs or selling viewing data in the case of TVs.
- retrac98 7y agoI know there’s not a mass market for it, but I think a lot of privacy conscious folks would pay extra not to have apps on their TV.
- kevin_thibedeau 7y agoIndustrial TVs are like this minus the speakers.
- majewsky 7y agoI have a 40" 4K PC monitor for this purpose. Works reasonably well.
- ericskiff 7y agoI buy these. I'm pretty easy to please, their 1080p is great, a little bright at the corners but I truly don't care, it looks great when watching actual shows/movies. https://www.walmart.com/browse/electronics/sceptre-tvs/3944_1060825_1939756_5735890 https://www.walmart.com/browse/electronics/sceptre-tvs/3944_... Cheap / Dumb display panels. Bring your own apple/chromecast/retropie whatever
- 0xffff2 7y agoAt this point, don't most people primarily use their dumb-TVs either by hooking up a cable box, game console, etc? A quick look a Newegg suggests that plain old LCD monitors can be had up to 43" for quick reasonable prices.
- PascLeRasc 7y agoHeck, all I want is a decent panel, one HDMI port, and no speakers. Let me do all the inputs and audio myself with an AV receiver.
