Nepal private schools mandate Mandarin after China's sponsorship
- godelmachine 7y agoLooks like India’s foreign policy is not that good after all.
- programmer_dude 7y agoYou can lead a horse to water ... Learning Mandarin is not easy, expect resistance from the students.
- llampx 7y agoI'm surprised they're mandating Mandarin rather than just starting with changing the views of students towards China.
- sandstrom 7y agoIn preparation for the anschluss…
- NotPaidToPost 7y agoLearning to speak mandarin is not difficult and arguably the grammar is simpler than in English. Learning to read and write is difficult because of the quantity but characters are highly structured. It's interesting and I don't see what there should be any "resistance" from the students. Nepal has a border with China, it does seem like a good idea to teach Chinese in schools. Like it makes sense for China to promote this. The state of the media when this anecdote from a remote country makes headlines all over the place... With the usual suggestions of sinister motives.
- philshem 7y ago> Nepal has a border with China... RIP Tibet
- NotPaidToPost 7y agoThis is a flamebait comment, frankly, and unsubstantive comments are banned on HN. Nepal has never been under Chinese rule and has never been claimed by China. Tibet was part of the Chinese empire before breaking away with the very interested help of the Brits, who did try to invade Nepal as well.
- chewz 7y ago> Tibet was part of the Chinese empire before breaking away with the very interested help of the Brits, who did try to invade Nepal as well. Like saying "Manchuria was part of Japan Empire before breaking away with help of Stalin".
- philshem 7y agoPut another way, the region of China that shares a border with Nepal is not Mandarin speaking. Edit: https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Mandarin_and_Jin_in_China.png https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Mandarin_and_Jin_in_...
- NotPaidToPost 7y agoIt is. Every time there is an article related to China on HN, it turns into an appalling display of ignorance and thin-veiled racism. Edit: The map you have added only proves my point that you are commenting in total ignorance in addition to being off topic and incorrect. The article is about a very normal and positive development, yet some people (who claim to be smart and educated) leave such nasty comments. Why?
- philshem 7y agoI scrolled through your comment history and see lots of grey text. Have a nice day!

- powerapple 7y agoIt is a good thing. So many Chinese tourists go to Nepal, and students can learn and do business with China, it will boost Nepal economy greatly. Nepals are going to Middle East for jobs now, because English is what they learn. English is mandatory in Chinese public and private school for ages.
