Fake followers?
Looking at her account, I don't get why she'd have so many followers. She isn't good looking, not interesting, her videography and photography is very average.
- askafriend 7y agoYeah your intuition is largely right. This has already been talked about on Twitter to death. Her engagement metrics for the number of followers she has are not up to par. It suggests that she didn't build a real audience and took the route of boosting her profile with shallow tactics. Real people with real audiences (think MKBHD, Casey Neistat, etc) are superstars and have real influence.
- AndrewKemendo 7y agoI'm not super familiar with what the right metrics would be here for 2M followers, but at my quick glance the numbers @arii has are about on par with with numbers that @MKBHD has for likes and comments per post: Hundreds of thousands of likes and hundreds to a thousand comments on each post. What kind of engagement metrics are you seeing that are drastically different between them?
- AmVess 7y agoShe wanted to start a clothing line. The world is overflowing with lines of clothing. Entering an over crowded market with a t shirt that's just like a billion other new t-shirts? I'm surprised she sold as many as she did.
- wildrhythms 7y agoOr the audience is simply not invested. Twitch streamers sell merch to a much smaller audience, and probably to the same group of audience who is also subscribed at $5/month. The audience is already invested and want to support the content; do Instagram followers feel like they're supporting the content in the same way? Is a follower count even a good metric to judge audience captivation? Maybe this is a wake up call to marketing agencies that influencers aren't nearly as captive as their follower count suggests.
- orev 7y agoBut that’s the concept of “influencers” — not to sell things directly, but to influence an audience for when they actually do buy something. That is what most advertising aims to do — not to make people get up and go buy the thing immediately.
- grogenaut 7y agoDoes it matter to the marketing agencies that the influences can't make money in the short term, their products still get the exposure they're looking for.
- MzxgckZtNqX5i 7y agoYeah, I think so. The first post was on September 2017 and she currently has 144 posts, in almost 92 weeks. You don't get to 2,6M followers with such activity.
- thih9 7y ago> She isn't good looking, not interesting, her videography and photography is very average All of these are relative; plus, there are other reasons to follow an account.
