I find it highly applicable when you're approaching a new domain or skill you're not proficient or even familiar with, or when handling complex systems that you shouldn't mindlessly touch without forethought. You don't deal with those by just winging it, there's a deliberate process you apply to get yourself into these things, and more often than not, these deliberate processes are not your state-of-flow stuff (e.g. heavy research on a subject matter, writing documentation before working on a large feature, etc.)
