Around Ottawa, a house rents for similar prices, perhaps a couple hundred less, but the same house can be bought for half the price. It absolutely makes sense to rent in the GTA but less so around Ottawa. Landlords in the GTA are banking on ever escalating real estate prices to make a profit when they finally sell. Rent doesn't always scale with land-value.
