Private trash burning is still a standard practice in many parts (all?) of India. This was fine when it was just plant & animal matter, but now this will include plastics. I'd not be surprised if this is a main contributor to this issue.
- firasd 7y agoAs the article mentions, agricultural fires aka crop stubble burning is a big deal too. The entire north (including Delhi) gets choked with smoke every October https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Stubble_burning#Stubble_burning_in_India https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Stubble_burning#Stubble_burnin...
- koboll 7y agoAnd if you Google "India flood zone map", the floodplains nearly perfectly align with the worst areas of air pollution, pointing strongly to an agriculture-linked cause.
- heavenlyblue 7y agoIf you actually look at the map data the difference between New York and 99% of India is only 3 vs 5 parts per billion. I could only believe in trash burning being the reason to that if and only if the difference would have been orders of magnitude. That difference could be easily accounted for only by the near presence of the mountains and thus lesser natural ventilation of the particles.
- dsfyu404ed 7y agoI agree that if everyone burning trash were the cause you'd see a bigger difference but it's worth nothing that NYC is not exactly the pinnacle of air quality.
