All I ever hear about in regards to news websites is that they're dying out because no one wants to pay for subscriptions, and the arms race is getting worse as many of them have strengthened their paywalls so that non-paying viewers can't see the articles (while others develop workarounds for the paywalls). Magazines, like newspapers, also seem to be dying out, though not as fast as the print newspapers. Maybe companies should rethink this business model.
