I moved around as a kid and had to change schools, it definitely made keeping in touch with people hard. I can't do "What's up" with people who aren't near as it gets tiring after a while and I prefer hanging out with people in person. So, most of the friends I have now are either from uni or people who I met in my first job. Though moving around did help me in one thing. Despite being an introvert, it forced me to try to talk to new people.
