I almost got into IRC ten years ago, when I was active in a programming community that used it in addition to their message board. The idea of having to keep my computer on all the time in order to stay in the loop, and having to learn yet another set of arcane commands for a chat window, was a big turn off then. I wouldn't even consider it today unless there was a specific need to use it, sorry.
- ViViDboarder 7y agoI got in for a similar reason. I was put off by that for a while too, but then someone introduced me to ZNC. One of the members of our core team set up a server and it was smooth sailing after that.
- 300bps 7y agoThere are probably over 100 IRC clients that don’t require arcane commands and you certainly don’t need to keep your computer on all the time. mIRC is an IRC client that has been around for 24 years and makes IRC very easy. I stopped using IRC about 20 years ago but I got a lot of knowledge out of my time on DALnet and then Undernet.
