I do wish Americans (and it seems to be an American peculiarity) would stop using "off" (and its heinous derivative, "off of") as a general-purpose preposition.

I do wish Americans (and it seems to be an American peculiarity) would stop using "off" (and its heinous derivative, "off of") as a general-purpose preposition. "From" will usually suffice.
