Define "immigration". One of the problems that smart, educated, intern-level immigrants have is they are getting caught in the crossfire of millions of uneducated day-laborers streaming over the border.
We should have increased immigration on a merit-based system (obviously college students would be a strong merit).

Unless you take the position that immigration policies should be based on primacy of residence, in which case, bringing in specialists over non-specialists while at the same time not promoting specialization for natives is detrimental to the current residents. If we spent as much money on visas training the amorphous 'backwards middle america', we probably wouldn't need so many specialists.. and this 'need' is itself debatable.. i prefer working class immigrants. perhaps it is because as middle class i don't see them as a threat, but they seem much more humble than Dr. So And So who demands XYZPQ because he is a Global Elite YakketySchmakety.
- klipt 7y agoSurely from an economic perspective, the "best" immigrants are the kind who earn a lot, paying a lot of taxes into your state/country, while not using a lot of taxpayer dollars in terms of social services, not having a lot of children who go to public schools, etc?
