Why not wait until they're adults and they can consent to the procedure?
- droithomme 7y agoThe Judaic perspective is that the covenant applied to all future generations at the time of Moses. It is the son's father who consents to pass the legacy on and indicates this choice eight days after birth or thereabouts through this ritual. One does not choose to be a Jew, one's ancestors made that choice for oneself. There are many secular Jews and they are Jews none the less, accepted by the tribe even if they do not accept the beliefs. It's not the same kind of covenant as being born again or other personal belief systems that a person chooses for themselves. Individualism is also a belief system, a cult, and is valid in and of itself. But it's not the only system, nor is it the most correct, nor even correct at all according to many.
- andy_ppp 7y agoI think it’s correct that unnecessary operations should only be done with the full consent of those participating... and even then I’d question the reasoning behind them. Just saying ah fuck it, we just chop bits of your penis off without asking you because a made up book says to, is equivalent to saying individuals have certain inalienable rights to decide for themselves what is done to their bodies is beyond insane.
- hanniabu 7y agoIn addition to what the others have said, it's less painful and easier to have done when younger. This is like saying parents shouldn't be allowed to make kids go to school, they should wait until they're old enough to make the decision themselves. Sometimes parents need to make a decision for their children, it's only logical.
- dbtqgoat 7y agoThat’s such bullshit reasoning. It’s weird, sick, body mutilation of a child without their consent.
- hanniabu 7y agoIt's not bullshit at all. Let's look at it a different way. If a child has some physical mutation such as webbed feet, an extra finger, or some other physical difference that they wouldn't affect their health, you're telling me a doctor shouldn't ask if a parent would like to have something done about it and instead the child should grow up with that until they are old enough to give consent? When is a proper age for consent?
