CockroachDB has raised over $50M of Venture capital which obviously pushes them on the "grow revenue fast" track, which is much easier if you do not have competition from the cloud vendors. I think there is so much black and white positioning of this issue - competition from AWS does not eliminate revenue for the project, but reduces it, by a lot. It may not be enough for Open Source company which relies on heavy monetization
