Good post. A lot of people see platforms like Twitter as inherently terrible, but if you follow the right people, Twitter can be a very good platform to learn new things and talk to interesting and smart people on. You just have to carefully curate who you follow, remembering to unfollow anyone that posts bad or excessively polarizing or uninteresting content.
The same goes for blogs, which are often looked down upon more than they should be due to the negative connotations of referencing a blogpost rather than a paper in a published journal, even though there are clearly some blogs that are better than some journals.

- bongobongo 7y agoYes.
- possiblelion 7y agoNot if you use lists. They are one of the most underrated tools in Twitter; allowing you to clean up and arrange your feed, Not having people you're not following injected into your feed is just another bonus.
- antisemiotic 7y ago>A lot of people see platforms like Twitter as inherently terrible Good users can overcome deficiencies of a platform, but it's hard to deny that material conditions influence the level of discussion. Twitter always struck me as a platform delibrately designed to streamline low-effort shitposting and drama. Similarly, Reddit and (to a slightly lesser degree) HN are skewed towards circlejerking because of karma, while imageboards are conductive to thoughtless memeing and drive-by thread derailment, since there's hardly any downside to that when no one knows your posting history. Usenet was already dead/dying when I started to go online and I have no idea what went wrong there, I think that PhpBB fora weren't all that bad after all but that's probably just rose tinted glasses. I dreally wish there's some answer to building online communities besides "people are shit and when you bring N people together you get N^2 shit".
- throwayEngineer 7y agoHope you love hearing about Trump. Twitter is unusable because I don't give a care about political tweets. Care isn't a strong enough word. I hate political Twitter.
