How does this move disqualify CRDB as a dependency of other open source projects?
- JoshTriplett 7y agoThe majority of open source projects need to be usable without installing proprietary dependencies. Whatever you might think of CockroachDB's choice, this means that any other project depending on them makes their users deal with that license too, and while CockroachDB might be willing to push that on their users, that doesn't mean other projects want to follow them down that path and lose their users in the process. Leaving aside any license compatibility issues, an open source project with a proprietary dependency will lose users compared to an open source project with entirely open dependencies. This also causes problems for some Linux distributions.
- bpicolo 7y agoPresumably the open source package in question would just support the Postgres protocol, with cockroach being one option? What else are you envisioning there?
- gavindean90 7y agoAs far as I can tell as part of POC downloads for open projects they always use either MySQL or Postgres if they are going to use a relational database. Cockroach seems to be in a good place here as you can just substitute Postgres for Cockroach.
- geofft 7y agoAmong other reasons, most open source projects expect their dependencies to be things they can interact with like they're open source. It's one of the reasons OSS support for Windows is poorer than support for OSS platforms, despite Windows as a whole being far more popular. This might be close enough, in that developers can install it on their own, you can put it in CI, etc. But it's a barrier.
