Economics 101 states that wasteful duplication of infrastructure is one of the few acceptable exceptions from the free market thesis. Natural monopolies should nevertheless be regulated to avoid suboptimal services. What’s more interesting is the recent suggestions of seeing industries with a monopolistic business model such as social media as natural monopolies. Perhaps we should regulate Facebook rather than argue for breaking up telecoms?
