Even if Huawei handsets in Europe are not a threat to national security, most consumers would expect them to be able to run Android, which Google can no longer sell them...
- Waterluvian 7y agoIt's a great opportunity for the rest of the world to stop leaning on American companies and American technology. It would be wonderful for a European and/or an Asian alternative to Android to emerge.
- dillonmckay 7y agoAre you giving VC funding for this?
- Waterluvian 7y agoYes.
- i_am_proteus 7y agoSailfish OS claims to be mature and available for "corporate customers." I haven't seen any evidence past their own website, though.
- mpol 7y agoThe Russian government is using Sailfish in a big way. I heard the Russian post-office as well. There were negotiations with the Chinese government, but I assume that might have fallen through. Jolla is not much B2C anymore, mostly B2B now.
- briandear 7y agoWhat has stopped Europe from doing this already? What conditions in Europe have prevented more innovation when it comes to hardware and software development?
- ehvatum 7y agoStephen Elop
- hahan_may 7y agoAsian alternatives maybe, but European ones, alas. It seems no European on HN has pointed out that the biggest or perhaps sole victim of aggression of Chinese tech company so far has been european companies, not U.S. ones, which has profited enormously from investing in china. It's funny to see eureopean countries/companies/people backing whuawei purely out of lefty liberal anti-american brainwash in decades.
- scotty79 7y agoI wonder why would Huawei bother buying android from Google instead of just using it, or respect any patent for that matter. If USA refuses to play with Huawei why Huawei should play with USA?
- ci5er 7y ago1) Android was an example. There are many components in a phone. 2) Much of the margin/profit comes from sales in international markets. For example, the EU. Where WTO-wise, copyright and patent rights still hold.
