I’ve been hesitant to agree with calls in the past to break Google up, but now it’s time. This is Google choosing what’s best for their investors over what’s right for the community. This is Google doing evil.
- benatkin 7y agoI found your comment grayed out. I think the Google downvote brigade is out in full force. Your comment may contain no information but it's the opinion of someone who hangs out on HN regularly!
- lern_too_spel 7y agoI downvoted because it misses the distinction between not doing evil, which Google never claimed, and not being evil. This is Google being evil.
- Zelphyr 7y agoYou're right, and I stand corrected. I mistakenly thought their quote was "Don't do evil" when it was "Don't be evil"[1]. Still... I'll take the downvote because I was wrong, but your clarifying comment did more to educate me on my error than a downvote could. Apropos of my original comment; Apparently their new motto is "Do the right thing." which I question how they can justify this move to prohibit ad blockers as doing the right thing. So now (to your point) they're being evil and doing the wrong thing. 1: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Don%27t_be_evil https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Don%27t_be_evil
- benatkin 7y agoI think "do the right thing" has just the ambiguity they want. If you're trying to win at a video game, you do the right thing. It doesn't matter if you're playing a good character or an evil character. Same if you're trying to learn to golf. Google is a faceless and unprincipled company that has the profit motive and nothing more. They're shaping up to the perfect example of https://thecorporation.com/ https://thecorporation.com/ only they're playing a very long game compared to the Exxons and Wal-Marts of the world, and part of it is tricking people into thinking they care about not being evil. I think they might harm the environment every bit as much as Exxon but perhaps it will be in the form of paperclip maximizers. https://wiki.lesswrong.com/wiki/Paperclip_maximizer https://wiki.lesswrong.com/wiki/Paperclip_maximizer
