I need to register with medium now to actually read the article?
- comprev 7y agoIt looks like you get 1 month "free". Open the article in incognito mode and it's available without registration.
- labster 7y ago> Get one more story in your member preview when you sign up. It’s free. Oh wow, one free story for logging in! Such generosity of content other people wrote for free. Why did we all leave LiveJournal again?
- 55555 7y agoMedium pays the writers who opt-in to the paywall by dividing rev on a pro rata basis a la spotify.
- rajasimon 7y agoThey can also block you from the same IP I guess. can they?
- arthurfm 7y agoAnother alternative is the 'Medium.com Unlimited Reading: Original' extension [1][2]. - maximente 7y agoblock cookies on medium.com domain, seems to work OK
- klaaz0r 7y agoYeah I can get passed it but damn it's become a mess, I understand they have to make money.
- rocqua 7y agoIt seems we have a pretty fucked up cycle here: * Create quality service, prioritizing user experience over money * Grow site to significant user base * Start running out of money, because hosting and running a site does cost money * Try to monetize service * Get out-competed by another service still at step 1 The presence of VC money that's all about capturing market share now, and monetizing later does not help. In the end, we have become accustomed to a world where things that cost money are given to us for free. When there are attempts to charge us so things remain sustainable, we get angry! It's a tough problem, and I don't know the solution.
- klaaz0r 7y agoI was just thinking that, fully agree. One of the things I learned from startup school: Get people to pay asap. If you are really are solving a problem they do not care that your website is a bit buggy and it's made with bootstrap. All these platforms rake in millions of VC money to get market share (that is fine btw) but if you do not know how to monetize it, what is the point? And of course always being free and then moving to a paid model doesn't make your users really happy.
- TeMPOraL 7y agoYou're missing a step between "Try to monetize" and "Get outcompeted" - the "Service turns to user-abusing, steaming pile of hot garbage". This cycle does happen repeatedly (image sharing being a prime example), and services that die do so because their monetization strategies destroy almost all the good aspects. I believe it's hard, but not impossible, to refrain from abusive monetization and stay afloat longer.

- plasma 7y agoMedium has become the new Quora; it’s primary purpose was to read (and answer) and it’s a painful experience.
- tqkxzugoaupvwqr 7y agoYou can press the X to close the “Pardon the interruption” overlay that asks you to sign in.
- rkangel 7y agoThe chrome extension 'Make medium readable again' solves this for me: https://chrome.google.com/webstore/detail/make-medium-readable-agai/kljjfejkagofbgklifblndjelgabcmig https://chrome.google.com/webstore/detail/make-medium-readab... It is ridiculous that I have to install an extension to make a website usable though. I'm genuinely curious why people publish on Medium.
- slenk 7y agoWhere is the love for FF
- rkangel 7y agoPersonally, I had a go with Firefox (desktop and Android) again when they were making all the fuss about quantum, but it was still much slower than chrome for my workload - I regularly ran into common tasks that took >50% longer. Combine that with the fact that some websites work less well in FF and I just couldn't face it, however much I'd like to support them.
- slenk 7y agoContainer Tabs are so nice. I honestly haven't run into slowdowns - maybe on Youtube where its known that Google doesn't play nice with other browsers. There's also the whole issue of not letting Google control the web but that's for a different time.
