Open Task Manager or Intel Power Gadget (on Mac) and watch your CPU frequency - it already downclocks itself when it's not under load. Usually my 4770 is around 1.2Ghz idling, and I believe some motherboards let you set a minimum clock lower than that in the BIOS.
