I can empathise with his point of view. Sometimes all going the extra mile gets you is a shrug of the shoulders or worse, grief. If tv didn't exist, people would be more impressed with you for inventing blurry 405 line b&w than high definition colour. The latter makes it look easy, the former gives them some inkling that it's a technically difficult task. They'll be more grateful and impressed as a consequence.
