Why? Is bulk/restaurant produced food inherently more bland than home cooked?

  No, but it's made more tasty with those items. The milk bars seem to have been named that way for a reason - did they make extensive use of cream?

    Apparently yeah. > Although the typical bar mleczny had a menu based on dairy items, these establishments generally also served other, non-dairy traditional Polish dishes as well. But when I visited, it was more like a canteen that served quality, home-style meals.
