It's a problem because states like Alabama were very important in the 2016 Presidential election. The US government system wasn't designed with the idea that large swaths of the population aren't just in favor of limited government, they're largely cynical of the entire concept of government altogether. The current state of politics in the deep south largely depends upon the continued suffering of its residents. Politicians then direct the anger generated by that suffering at the Federal Government, and look at how that played out in 2016.
