I think it would useful to have this implemented as a actual feature on the site. If we can't make a decision without knowing how other people feel, I think that's a disadvantage. At its worst, the karma system helps fuel a popularity contest. At best, it helps interesting comments rise to the top. This system stands to discourage the first, and encourage the second.
