- squarefoot 7y agoMine is built around an even cheaper used Atom fanless Mini-itx board plus Nas4Free (1) which is more than enough for serving multiple full HD videos (2) around the house, so speed isn't that important; the network would be the limit anyway. (1) I know it's old, but attempting a live upgrade to XigmaNas would be risky, so I'll reinstall it at the next maintenance stop. (2) as files through NFS and SMB shares, not transcoded and streamed; ie, the player does the dirty work, not the NAS.
- W-Stool 7y agoI ran NAS4Free for years but found that I could not configure it to email me an alert when the chassis fan failed or the RAID array degraded. You can guess what happened - fan failed and a drive cooked. Was this ever addressed/fixed? Otherwise I thought it was pretty great.
- lunchables 7y agoYou will probably pay that much ($60) more per year in power than using an ARM SBC. I'm not saying it's not a good option, just want to be fair. I think using a regular old x86 PC with lots of space gives you far more flexibility. It's just larger, noisier and more expensive to operate. They both have their pros and cons. Personally I use a small NAS enclosure with a mini-itx board and x86 CPU.
