I'm a bit confused why they didn't use EXPLAIN ANALYZE at all in this case. Debugging performance issues in Postgres without it makes it unnecessarily hard. I'm not entirely sure without being able to try it myself, but I suspect it should have immediately identified in sufficient detail where most of the time in that query was spent .
