Consider that the impossible burger is made from soy, and soy is the 2nd largest GMO crop. (https://www.huffpost.com/entry/genetically-modified-food_b_2039455 https://www.huffpost.com/entry/genetically-modified-food_b_2...) Genetically modified soy is one of the top crops that use Monsanto's infamous Round-Up (https://www.motherjones.com/food/2014/04/superweeds-arent-only-trouble-gmo-soy/ https://www.motherjones.com/food/2014/04/superweeds-arent-on...)... so... while I agree reducing the number of cows we slaughter is a very good thing, increasing the need for more Round-Up ready crops is NOT (IMHO).
- X6S1x6Okd1st 7y agoWhy do you feel that GMO is bad?
- petre 7y agoIt's not so much the GMOs but rather the chemicals they're treated with. https://www.reuters.com/article/us-bayer-glyphosate-lawsuit-appeals-anal/bayer-bets-on-silver-bullet-defense-in-roundup-litigation-experts-see-hurdles-idUSKCN1SM2R3 https://www.reuters.com/article/us-bayer-glyphosate-lawsuit-...

- himeexcelanta 7y agoPlease be careful to separate the fundamental technology from the immoral business models it allows Monsanto to adopt.
- hummus_monster 7y ago90% of soy grown worldwide is fed to livestock. Some is also used for fuel. Soy grown for human consumption is sprayed with less pesticides than that grown for feed and fuel. It takes about 12 kg of feed to produce 1 kg of beef. So in the absolute "worst-case" where impossible burgers are made entirely of GMO soy, that's at least a 10x reduction in round up use.
- foxyv 7y agoTo add to this, you are also removing the pesticides and antibiotics used in cattle farms and reducing land use. I can't wait until I can buy a 3 pound chub of Impossible Foods hamburger for cheaper than cow meat.
