  Oh dear.. So the left hand is for dirty work, and the right hand for clean? But why do we shake hands with the right hand then? I guess there could be some "social respect" reason, but from a germs-and-stuff point of view it seems nonsensical?

    The right hand is your weapon hand. So by offering it, you are stating that you do not intend to fight.
