While I have a very high disregard for San Franseptic, I do applaud this decision if it comes to pass.
I think the broad use of facial recognition by governments will lead to nothing but disaster for its non-violent citizens.
- eanzenberg 7y agoLook up Singapore, and how disastrous it is.
- Rebelgecko 7y agoThe google results for 'Singapore facial recognition' are fairly useless, would you mind elaborating on their program?
- eanzenberg 7y agoI get a bunch of results. https://govinsider.asia/connected-gov/singapore-to-use-facial-recognition-for-national-digital-identity/ https://govinsider.asia/connected-gov/singapore-to-use-facia...
- Rebelgecko 7y agoAll of the results I got were related to your link or a different program to put 100,000 cameras into street lamps. It looks like neither of these has happened yet, so I think it is too early to judge the consequences.
- eanzenberg 7y agoIt goes hand in hand with crime. Do you like crime? Do you not?
- Rebelgecko 7y agoI don't feel like you're asking those questions in good faith. In general, very few people are going to say they "like" crime. That doesn't mean they would support a 1984-style police state (not saying that is Singapore's situation, just giving an example). And to be fair, that's still not really relevant to the question posed by grayed-down, which was regarding the impact on non-violent citizens. Considering Singapore has mandatory death sentences for some non-violent crimes, it's worth thinking about.
- otterley 7y agoSame with London.
- jackfoxy 7y agoIt will lead to unintended consequences, for certain. Disaster is a loaded term in this case, which contains no actionable or otherwise useful information. No doubt private concerns will happily continue to use or not use facial recognition of images captured within the city limits. The genie is out of the bottle.
- grayed-down 7y agoOne unintended consequence for one person is a disaster in the life of that person. And you're right; the genie is out and about.
