Indeed.
I was recently reading "The Nurture Assumption" by Judith Rich Harris. Many parents believe they have a large influence on their children's personality (traits like confidence).
However, it seems like the influence of their peers vastly outweighs what parents do (outside of actual abuse, which is of course bad).
- SketchySeaBeast 7y agoWas their discussion in the book about home schooled kids? I'd be interested in how that changes the dynamic.
- ansible 7y agoI don't recall much discussion of home-schooled kids. Unless the parents are deliberately limiting the children's socialization with peers their own age, I'd expect that it doesn't matter. The common misconception is that kids emulate their parents to become successful adults. Where in actuality, kids emulate other (sometimes slightly older) kids, in order to become successful kids.
