I'll save you the trouble:
Facebook: We're very sorry. We had no idea they would use our platform this way. We'll take steps to make sure it never happens again.
Everybody: This is an outrage! Facebook is evil.
Also everybody: I'm bored. I'll check Facebook.
Almost nobody: I stopped using Facebook.
Lawmakers: This is unacceptable!
Also lawmakers: Hey Facebook, here's some ad money for my next campaign.
Shareholders: Oh good, the damage is a known. Stock price is up, this is great!
7 months from now: Breaking: Major Privacy Breach at Facebook
- wybiral 7y ago> Almost nobody: I stopped using Facebook. I can't speak for the general population but I know plenty of people who have quit FB in recent years (myself included).
- oliveshell 7y agoI do too, but sadly it seems that technical folks who follow this stuff closely and care about privacy are a pretty small slice of the general population.
- product50 7y agoFacebook releases their monthly active numbers with their quarterly earnings. By all means the numbers have been trending up, even at their massive reach, despite all the challenges they have been facing. So looks like you and your friends are not representative of the general population.
- doingmyting 7y agoA lot of people have ironically quit Facebook in favor of instagram. I personally know of many who've quit Facebook but I don't know anyone who've quit instagram or WhatsApp
- vinay427 7y ago> Also everybody: I'm bored. I'll check Facebook. > > Almost nobody: I stopped using Facebook. These seem like they're less contradictory than you perhaps made them seem. For the former, people checking Facebook requires there to be content from their friend circles to view. It isn't enough to have people willing to check their feed. As for the second one, many people I know (myself included) simply post much less or virtually never, which for most practical purposes is similar to stopping the use of it entirely. Few completely abstain because that's not always practical, but not contributing goes along way towards minimizing data collection.
