In Spain, the immigrants that I talked to said it took them about 3 years to become proficient, and the first year was horrendous and hard as they could not communicate the essentials of daily life (going to stores, navigating public transit).
- dotancohen 7y agoAt twenty, I moved countries. I literally had to lie and say that I do not speak English to get the locals to speak to me in the local language. Telling them that I'm Finnish worked well enough, until I was introduced to a Finn. That was one of the more awkward moments of my life!
