Somewhat related - I'll charge for analysis and a briefing doc as well before speccing the actual project. Sometimes in marketing clients don't know what the outcome they want is (other than, "make moar £££s"), so reviewing what they're doing is also another good funnel into a larger gig. Again, this helps clarify the intent and scope when you launch into a larger engagement.
