I don't think the fact that they got acquired necessarily tells you that much about whether they would have been profitable on their own. Probably internet of things is a game Google don't want to be left out of, so they acquired one of the leaders. If this is the case, then it leaves open the possibility that Nest had a choice between profitable and more profitable.
