Ask HN: New Grad Student Seeking Advice for CS Fields to Study for Career
I am just beginning a part-time M.S. program in C.S., and I am surveying the HN community for insight into areas of C.S. research/domains that are new, interesting, growing, etc, that could lead to a lasting career that can have a positive impact on society: i.e. help to chip away solution-by-solution at very big important problems we are facing (climate change, privacy, energy consumption, <your idea here>, etc). There is the dilemma that AdTech/MarTech can fund "lasting" careers, but I don't think those fields are addressing important problems. I am hoping the HN community can provide more insight.
Thanks!
For example: I recently saw Andrew Ng's Stanford group is looking at applying AI for Climate Change.

Is this strictly a research area or can this create a company that can positively improve the situation we are in (or is it "buzzy")?
