Ask HN: Do Read/Unread/Online/Typing messaging app status make you anxious?

In my opinion Read/Unread/Online/Typing status don't provide any important information to the end user. Having them enabled by default just increase total n. of messages sent for any messaging app, as you always feel "I have to reply because he/she knows that I read the message". What do you think about it?
