Personally, I'd expect moving in either direction between management and development would be difficult. I've +15 years as a developer, but 0 as a manager. Id need a fair amount of training and some stumbling to be effective as a manager (of developers). And I just started a new job as a dev with a track to management to replace my manager when he retires. Frankly, at times, it scares me. I've several years to prepare, though.
