just to answer my own question in case anyone's interested https://devblogs.microsoft.com/commandline/announcing-wsl-2/ https://devblogs.microsoft.com/commandline/announcing-wsl-2/ looks like it is a VM they're using rather than the WSL1 emulation approach.
