To throw a data point out there - I'm from the USA and I value family more than anything. That being said, money is a tool that lets me spend more time with my family. I don't care about the currency itself, but I work hard and save because money is time/power that enables me to spend more of my time with my family. It's complicated to try to untangle motives and values when money is involved because it enables other values.
