CNC programming with CAM software is very heavily visually oriented. I don't usually touch a single line of g-code other than to occasionally check certain things. Your comment also reminded me of Godot's editor and gdscript. It's fairly domain specific(though the editor is actually a godot game). Everything's designed to work with gdscript. The language and the editor are designed to work seamlessly together in much the way you describe.
