Yeah that's true for the distributed application you mentioned with the wire. Certainly advantages there, especially when you control all the nodes. I hate seeing the fields of a communication protocol listed in two structs - an ifdef BIG_ENDIAN and LITTLE_ENDIAN. They will invariably be inconsistent, someone will change something in little but not big, or even worse, update one incorrectly and not test it.
