I think Ruby borrowed them from Perl's Statement modifiers (http://perldoc.perl.org/perlsyn.html#Statement-Modifiers http://perldoc.perl.org/perlsyn.html#Statement-Modifiers). I like them and use them when I want the focus to be on the body rather than the conditional.
